Brake Systems Repair
Many of today's cars have disc brakes in the front and drum brakes in back. And all brakes rely on friction, which is supplied by either a brake pad or a brake shoe to slow and stop your car. To stop a wheel, a disc brake uses a caliper fitted with brake pads to grab a spinning disc, or rotor. A drum brake has a wheel cylinder that pushes a brake shoe against the inside of a spinning drum.
Why It's Important to Flush Your Brake Fluid
Brake fluid should be flushed periodically because it is a hygroscopic fluid, meaning that it readily absorbs and retains moisture. With the understanding that many of the brake system components are made from metal, we can quickly see that moisture is the enemy.
Brake fluid, by absorbing any moisture that gets into the system and retaining it, helps to prevent moisture related corrosion and failure of internal brake system components. Even the highest quality brake fluid can only retain so much moisture, however, so it periodically must be flushed from the system and replaced with new fluid.
A good general rule of thumb on the frequency for having your modern vehicle's brake fluid flushed is to have it done every two years, especially on those vehicles equipped with antilock braking systems
Suspension and Drivetrain
Your shocks, springs, struts, steering and tires are all part of your suspension system. They all work together to keep you comfortable and in control on the road. When it comes to suspensions and drivetrains, a problem in one area can be a symptom of a problem in another area. If your tires are wearing unevenly, it may just be your tire pressure. Heavier wear in the middle means the pressure is too high. Heavy wear on the edges means the pressure is too low. But if you notice excessive wear on just one edge, it's usually a sign that you have an alignment / suspension problem that a mechanic should handle. For that and other symptoms like steering vibrations or pulling you should have your steering and suspension systems inspected. The inspection should include: checking the power steering fluid, listening for unusual noises while the vehicle is in motion and a visual inspection of all major suspension and drivetrain components including the shocks, struts and springs.

Inflation
Keeping your tires at the right pressure is the most important tire care job.
Outside temperature, highway versus city driving and other factors can change your tire pressure.
A label on the inside of the Driver side door panel tells you the recommended pressure.
Too little pressure causes the outside to wear faster; too much and the centre wears faster.
Proper pressure means the contact between the tire and the road is crucial for safety.
Properly inflated tires reduce gas consumption (and emissions, too).
Allignment
Your tires are adjusted to work together and line up in a certain way. Bumping into a curb, going over debris and plain use can throw out your alignment. Bad alignment causes uneven tire wear. Uneven wear means replacing your tires too soon.
New vs Used
You can't go wrong with the right new tires. But if you can accept the shorter lifespan of a used tire, it could be a great buy. That's because the surface of new tires wears away at an accelerated rate. In fact, 20% of the surface is gone in a couple of weeks of driving.
Winter vs All Season
Winter Tires are the ultimate for safe winter driving. You don't need snow to need winter tires. It's the temperature. Winter Tires are made with a special type of Rubber Compound that doesn't stiffen in the cold like All Seasons. How cold is cold? When the temperature on the surface of the road is 5°C.
Don't be fooled by other types of tire. Mud Tires, Rain Tires and anything else are not Winter Tires.
The type of tire is embossed into the side of the tire.
Rotation
No one drives in a straight line all the time. A tire on the front left won't wear the same as one on the right, or the back. You don't want to wind up with one worn out tire, so we rotate tires to even things out. Depending on your driving habits, 5,000 kilometres is usually right.
Today's Radial Tires need special attention when rotation. If the tread pattern is symmetrical on each side, we rotate each side front to back. Asymmetrical treads can be rotated in a diagonal pattern.
Mounting
Never try to mount your own tires. Tire mounting is a job for the people who have the proper equipment and experience. If you try to do it yourself, you run the risk of serious injury to yourself as well as possible damage to the tire and rim.
